Game notes for 17 March 2019, 14 April 2019, and 28 April 2019: The Trifecta

Dramatis personae

Xoran, fox-man ("rúskwē") swordsman
Mayhem, pint-sized barbarian
Josiah, a wandering minstrel he
Ash, knight
Nikotsu, mercenary
Caleb, wizard
Maquia, huntress cleric
Kôštē, NPC cleric

Quid occurrit

Maquia, a cleric, and Nikotsu, a swordswoman, chance upon Josiah’s farm, having heard about the ogre and his sword. Josiah doesn’t have any armor. Maquia recognizes the goo tree. There they go into the mine and down the lit-up tunnels and find the heroes. Ash hears them as he’s on point, turns off some torches, and he and Xóran get ready.

They go back to Fort Rénnutēs. Josiah has to ask his father if he can go and take his armor. His father says sure, but he isn’t his son. Instead, Josiah came to him as a baby, and his adoptive father has some old mail armor for him. Ash tries fitting the cheap heavy mail for Josiah. Then they set forth for town, and it takes seven days. Not much happened other than Caleb twisting his ankle, but Maquia sets his wounds.

They spend a week in town. Nikotsu sells their booty, leaving with enough to live well, while the others listen for leads on work. Josiah hears of a big dungeon in Dībités Rock in the woods, Ash hears of bandits and demons at the Abbey of the Respectful Warrior in the hills (not far from where they had fought the ogres, as it happens), and Mayhem hears of a dragon to the north of the woods who sits on a bow that never misses. The gang chooses to go for the dragon, with Maquia staying behind after slapping Xóran once she learns of his wariness towards blondes.

They set forth on the road both north and west, and run into seventeen giant bees, all of whom they either kill off or send flying away. Caleb gets a meal off a bee’s flesh, while Mayhem gets a dose of bee poison. Caleb talks about going after the bees instead of the dragon, but nobody else is interested. As Xóran says, they’re not going to try to kill the dragon, but instead want to take its hoard.

The next day, they go into the woods, after Maquia, having forgiven Xóran, shows up. They go into the woods, and see husks of white rope. Mayhem and Xóran, among others, know this to be the webbing of giant spiders, so stick to the north of there. The land slopes downward, and they reach a watery spot with caves and broken tree limbs on the ground. Xóran smells something odd, but they keep going, and Caleb doesn’t see anything in the caves.

That night, they make camp, and while on watch, Maquia spots two man-sized lizards that look like wingless dragons—tarakks. She slips behind a tree, and warns the others. Xóran slips into the night, and the heroes take on the tarakks. Aside from Nikotsu taking a breath of fire, they win unhurt, and Xóran takes their flesh for food.

Mayhem is easily able to find their tracks, and thus comes up with the idea of tracking them back to their lair. The heroes easily find the lair, a burrow on a hill, and again beat the tarakks, this time four of them. Xóran slips into their burrow after getting an Armor spell from Caleb, and finds the tarakks’ loot: copper, silver, and a gold button.

That night, they again talk about what to do next. Caleb keeps babbling on about the bees, and Maquia says that they should give in just so Caleb would shut up about them. Xóran, Mayhem, and Nikotsu want to go after the werewolf, and want to get back to town to get silvered weapons, as Caleb says that’s the only good way to hit them. Either way, they think that they don’t need to take on the dragon now, as they have loot and the dragon would be suicide.

They set forth back to town. They keep away from a herd of bison in the hilly land, but while camping, Xóran and Nikotsu see four jackals skulking around their camp. Again, they make short work of them, then keep going for town the next day, staying out of the woods after they see three giant spiders in there, watching them from their webs but not springing out for them.

That evening they make it to Ābûsun. While walking into the market village, the Town Watch stops them, and tells them that they must get sleeping space and drinks at the taverns or leave the village. Much of the village is in the trees, but they stay at the Feral Daughter, a tavern on the ground. There, they listen for chatter, and Xóran hears about goblins having an uprising at the mines, and Ash about kobolds hitting Kerváron.

Old news.

An elf smoking a nasty herb does beckon Xóran to him. He and Nikotsu come to listen to him. “We don’t see many rúskwi around here,” he tells Xóran, “though Ābûsun is a little more noble, a little more elvish.”

Nikotsu rolls her eyes. “Get to the point.”

The elf smiles at her. “Young lady, your race is always so impatient.” With that, Nikotsu walks away and gets a drink, and Xóran takes the chance and beckons Josiah to bring the white-haired elf, whose name is Alinéllo, a drink. “Anyways, there is an old village which a gang of orcs, the Vile Hand, now have. What you might want to know is that a sword that was well-known in my youth called Grân might be there, and strapping youths like you might want it. You’re better folks than those damn orcs, that’s for sure.” After finding out that Alinéllo is 408-years-young, Xóran gives him silver buckle for the information.

They make it to Mīštássun the next day, and now choose to go to the Abbey of the Respectful Warrior and fight the bandits there for their loot. They follow the river into the hills, and see another campfire to the northwest while camping. However, they stay near the river, and later the next day smoke out a bunch of rattlesnake swarms.

Three logs in one. I'm a lazy rotter, though I did have some school projects going on. Alright, most of that was in May. My excuses suck ass.

Nikotsu and Maquia are two new PCs whose players are not new to me: they're my daughters, aged 13 and 11. Sophie, my younger daughter, did have some issues with how Xóran didn't like blondes after his bad time with the lich (Maquia is a blonde), and stormed off for the last part of the first session, already bored to tears. Amazingly, she came back. She's also played Nikotsu a little bit in combat on 14 April (the tarakks) to cover for her sister Hannah, who was elsewhere, as she'll be this session (mom and grandpa want a fishing partner).

Josiah is the new character of Brandon, who played the late Uruk.

I do have some plans for blog posts besides game logs. Namely, now that some of the Kickstarter Backers have Dungeon Fantasy Monsters 2, some of the monsters I had developed for possible publication now have Kromm versions, and if nothing else I'll share my own work.

What the hell is a tarakk?

Last session, I briefly mentioned my players killed a tarakk. I didn't explain what a tarakk is. I'll do that and give some stats. It plainly isn't my creation; mine either have simple names (e.g., hellshot) or are in a constructed language (e.g., ōkanrôyos). I'm sure "tarakk" came about because Dave Hargraves thought it sounded cool.

Tarakks appear in Welcome to Skull Tower, I think on page 63 if you actually have a copy. I have the Arduin Grimoire Trilogy PDF, which gives page ranges, and I did some deduction of how much a page in the Trilogy was in the original (it's a 2:1 ratio, though I can't remember which had denser pages at the moment). Arduin, for those who don't know, was an early fan add-on to D&D, and was over-the-top, with classes going into the hundreds of levels. It was a little like Rifts for D&D, if you think about it. It's monsters are in the same vein; air sharks are the first one. They're exactly what's on the tin.

Tarakks, Arduin stats:

Tarakk

HD: 3+1 to 9+1 AC: 3 Speed: 9” (12” charge)
DEX: 7 – 14 Number: d6 Size: same as giant horned lizard
Attacks: Tarakk attack with 2 claws for d4 to d12 each, 1 bite for d12 to 3d12, or 1 breath of fire (a cone 30’ to 90’ long and 5’ to 15’ wide) that is equal in damage to its own hit dice. Once per day, it can “shoot” its 6d10 spearhead sized/shaped spiny scales in all directions, each hitting like a light catapult shot.
Looks: A cross between a dragon and a giant horned toad (lizard), it is wingless, and can change color like a chameleon.
Notes: They are 100% fireproof, and not very Intelligent (3 to 8). Their favorite food is horseflesh. Its fiery breath is usable 4 times daily, but only every 3rd melee turn. They are known to lie 50% of the time.

The one chained to the treasure chest wasn't a big one, so here are its GURPS stats:

Tarakk

A cross between a dragon and a big horned toad, it is wingless, and can change its hue like a chameleon.

ST: 7HP: 7Speed: 5.50
DX: 10Will: 10Move: 4
IQ: 3Per: 10Weight: 60 lbs.
HT: 12FP: 12SM: 0
Dodge: 8Parry: n/aDR: 3

Bite (13): 1d-3 cutting. Reach C.
Claws (13): 1d-3 cutting. Reach C.
Fire Breath (13): 1-yard-wide × 10-yard-long cone of fire does 1d burning. Ten-second recharge between shots.
Spines (9): 1d-2 impaling to anyone in close combat; this is a free attack each turn at +2 to those attacking from behind. Reach C. Once a day, the tarakk may shoot its spines at everyone in a 1-yard radius at skill 13. It then needs a full day for its spines to regenerate, so it can no longer use them in close combat for that time.

Traits:  Acute Taste and Smell 4; Breath Control 3; Chameleon 5; Cold-Blooded (50°); Discriminatory Smell; DR 30 (Limited, Heat/Fire); Enhanced Move 0.5 (Ground Move 6; Costs Fatigue, 2 FP); Quadruped; Wild Animal.
Skills: Brawling-13; Climbing-10; Innate Attack (Breath)-13; Innate Attack (Projectile)- 13; Stealth-10 (Becomes 15 if moving or 20 if not): Swimming-13.
Class: Dire Animal.
Notes: It loves to eat horses, and will attack them first. From Welcome to Skull Tower, p. 63.

I figured that something with an effective Stealth-20 is going to get a first blast if it can figure something's coming. It was waiting to unleash its spines when it died; everyone had swarmed around it in its last second.

Res stultae

The first day, 29 Párūs, still had wet ground, but they still got good time. Nothing happened, and they camped for the night.

The next day was 30 Párūs, which had nicer weather. In mid-morning they stumbled on three wolves as big as ponies. The wolves struck for their pony which also was as big as a pony, but they ran after Caleb singed them with Blast Ball, Kim and Anêr also having them good whacks. (The pony failed her Fright Check and was retching, or whatever ponies do that is near enough to retching for game purposes. This was a hidden blessing, since it meant that the pony didn't run.)

That afternoon, they started to see twisted trees and then twelve armed men on horses wearing the crimson-tinged black sashes of Dībités Rock ran into them. They chatted:

Lead goon: “Identify yourselves!"
Caleb: “We are but humble travelers."
Lead goon: “Come with us and we can put you up for the night."
Caleb: “Where would that be?"
Lead goon: “We are but servants of a master of a castle that is but a short ride from here."
Caleb: “Nah, we’re not much into castles.”
Lead goon: “Come with us!"
Caleb: “You need not trouble yourselves with us."
Lead goon: “You’re the ones who have found trouble."
Caleb: “Hey, did you notice some big ass wolves?"
Lead goon: “Wolves do not concern us."
Caleb: “They’re really big! They eat horses!"
Lead goon: “Are you gonna come peacefully or keep stalling?"
Caleb: “We’re not interested in staying in a castle tonight."
Goons nocked arrows.
Caleb: “Alright, we’ll go."
The goons surrounded the gang, and told it to move along.

Late afternoon, they reached Dībités Rock. Aidīvós, the bald majordomo, came out to greet them, and had this chat:

Aidīvós: “You guys again? How the hell did you guys get out?"
Caleb: “It’s just one of those things. We were minding our own business when these guys showed up. Do you always invite everyone over?"
Aidīvós grinned. “You know …"
Caleb: “No, we don’t know."
Aidīvós: “Gimme your loot and I’ll forget I saw you."
Caleb: “We’re kind of poor travelers, really."
Aidīvós: “If you got out, you have some."
Caleb: “We spent that! Geez, are you kidding?"
Aidīvós laughed. “C’mon, just gimme what you have."
The gang shook its money bags, and the goons took them, with 197 copper farthings and 193 silver pennies.
Aidīvós: “You know, a pleasure doing business with you. Now get out!"

They walked north and got to the dungeon that evening. There was a flock of ravens around the cave. They pitched camp, and early in the morning, a bunch of ravens came up while Anêr was on guard duty. The ravens started squawking, and Anêr woke Yémos to see if Yémos knew what to do with the ravens. None of them knew, and they slept later, luckily with no one bothering them.

They went into the dungeon, and walking through the long tunnel they ran into a toad as big as a man, which they killed. Yémos cast Create Food on it, and they trod on. Once they walked into the dungeon, they walked with their pony and turned around a few corners when a blast of fire greeted them. In a corner, they saw a tarakk chained to a chest. The fire spooked their pony, but they killed the tarakk.

We broke after almost four hours. John won one of those H&R Block tax prep rewards for $1,000, and he wanted to get it. He still doesn't have it as of Thursday afternoon, though this might be different now. "Malum," dixit Pu.

The log isn't as verbose as some, but it was truly a good session. Stuff in-game has been helped along by my custom hexcrawl worksheets, but they lead to logs of less literary worth, whatever that means. When I get around to revising them based on what I've actually used in play, I might share them.
